During normal and sometimes vaginal births, incisions are made at the vaginal opening to widen it towards the anus or leg, allowing the baby to exit more easily. These incisions, called episiotomies, not only facilitate the baby's passage through the vagina but also prevent tears towards the anus and protect surrounding tissues. However, after childbirth, the episiotomy site may heal poorly or not repair properly, leading to significant scarring (scar tissue) that can be distressing for the mother.
