Labioplasty, a cosmetic surgical procedure aimed at improving the aesthetic appearance of the vaginal area through reduction or correction of the labia minora, is a cosmetic surgery intervention to correct enlargement and sagging of the inner vaginal lips. This enlargement or sagging can be congenital or develop due to birth trauma. Labioplasty, performed for aesthetic purposes, can be performed on all women who are dissatisfied with the appearance of their inner genital walls.
In what situations is labiaplasty performed?
Labiaplasty, one of the most common genital aesthetic surgeries, is performed on labia minora that are larger, more saggy, or asymmetrical than normal. Excessively large labia minora, sagging labia minora, or a significant difference in size between the labia minora fall under the scope of labiaplasty. Large and sagging labia minora can lead to a lack of self-confidence in women, and in some cases, cause them to avoid sexuality, feel inadequate, or unattractive. These issues are particularly bothersome during sports and when the labia minora are visible in bikinis.
What causes labia minora to enlarge and sag?
Labiaplasty is usually performed as a result of tears in the inner labia during childbirth, accidents, and trauma. However, frequent weight fluctuations and having multiple children can also lead to a distortion of the normal appearance of the inner labia. In some women, thinness can also cause the inner labia to appear more prominent. Tissue loss after aging, menopause, some vaginal infections, and tumors can also cause enlargement or sagging of the inner labia.
How is labiaplasty surgery performed?
Labiaplasty surgery is typically performed under local or spinal anesthesia. However, in some cases, it may be performed under general anesthesia. During the procedure, the unwanted tissue in the vaginal area can be removed using either classic surgical or laser methods. To maintain hygiene in the surgical area, women should not menstruate during the period leading up to the procedure. The sutures used are dissolvable, so no suture removal is necessary. The patient is discharged the same day. There is no loss of sensation in the area after labiaplasty surgery.
