Vaginal hygiene is an important issue for women, but it's also quite confusing. While many women believe vaginal cleaning is necessary, many others are mistaken. So, should vaginal cleaning be done? Should the vagina be cleaned?
What is a vaginal douche?
Vaginal douching refers to washing the inside of the vagina with pressurized water or another liquid. In addition, there are specially formulated perfumed products or medications available for women to use for vaginal cleansing.
Is Vaginal Douching Healthy?
Although many people think vaginal douching is hygienic, it is actually unhealthy. When done regularly, vaginal douching disrupts the balance of the vaginal flora. Furthermore, washing the vagina can lead to the introduction of new microorganisms. These microbes have a very high probability of reaching the cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes. This possibility can lead to dangerous infections in these areas.
Another dangerous side effect of regular vaginal douching is pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Vaginal douching significantly increases the risk of PID. This can lead to infertility in the long term or, if left untreated, can be life-threatening.
Genital Area Cleaning Tips:
- The only proper type of cleaning for the genital area is gently washing the outer part called the vulva. You can wash this area with just water or with body wash. However, the important thing is to wash the area gently and without excessive rubbing. Otherwise, you may cause small tears that invite infections.
- Make sure to dry your genital area thoroughly after showering. Leaving the genital area moist creates a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi.
- Cotton underwear reduces sweating and allows the genital area to breathe. Try to choose cotton underwear.
- Choosing loose-fitting, comfortable trousers will help protect genital health.
- Products like soap, perfume, and wipes are harmful to the genital area. These types of products disrupt the vagina's acid-base balance, increasing the risk of burning, itching, and infection.
The vagina is an organ that naturally cleans itself with a secretion called mucus. It doesn't need extra cleaning. Therefore, I recommend avoiding washing the inside of your vagina while showering, after sexual intercourse, or after using the toilet.
Wishing you good health…
